Importing RSS feed

In this article

RSS feed import allows you to automatically post items from RSS feed to connected social media accounts.

You can choose social accounts for posting, customize the resulting text of posts, and customize how posts will be saved and published. For example, you can save posts as drafts or publish posts to social accounts using existing time slots.

💡
We use word "feed" in the app and here in this guide, meaning RSS-feed.

In this guide we use these feeds as examples:

You can use some of these feeds to try Pur Social.

Adding a new feed

💡
By default Pur Social publishes only new posts from the connected feed. To determine which post is new we use field `<pubDate>`, hence this field is required in the feed's items.

To get started, go to project's settings by clicking "Project Settings" in the menu.

Then go to RSS Import and click "Create", to create a new feed.

You will see RSS Import form. Here you can set up your RSS feed import.

Enter your feed URL into "RSS feed link" (1). Pur Social will validate it and if everything is fine, you will see green tick (like on the screenshot right where the (1) arrow points to).

Then select accounts you want to post updates in (2).

You can preview the post by clicking corresponding button (3).

And then click on "Save" button (4). The feed will be saved.

If you didn't change anything in "Post template" and "How to publish", Pur Social will check your feed every 10 minutes and updates will be published to the selected account. This behavior is customizable.

Creating an RSS feed source consists of three steps:

  • introduction of a link to the news feed and selection of pages on which the posts will be published,
  • setting the post type (text, links and attachments),
  • setting up checking the feed and saving publications.

After you've entered the link to the feed and have selected the pages, click on the "Next" button. Pur Social will check for errors in the RSS markup and take the latest news to customize the post look.

Customize the post type

The view of the imported social media RSS post is fully customizable. Using the preview allows you to see how the post will look on social networks when published.

You can customize:

  • what text the post will have,
  • what image will be used,
  • whether a large link-card (snippet) will be placed in social networks.

Post text

Setting where the text for the post will come from.

In order to be able to customize the desired text for a post with RSS, Pur Social reads all possible data from the RSS and news page.

For the text, you can select three simple options at once (title or description with RSS, title with og: description) or precisely set up the post text (Custom option).

Customizing post template

When you select Custom, a text editor will open, where you can enter both text and data from the RSS, which will be individual for each post.

Data from RSS and links can be entered manually or by clicking (as in the demonstration above).

Click "Preview" button to view how your post will look like:

Telegram buttons

You can automatically put buttons to RSS posts. Usually, these buttons are reactions: likes, smiles, etc.

Where the image for the post will come from.

For now, the service makes publications with one picture. The image source can be selected from the following options:

  • From enclosure: The image is taken from the first <enclosure /> tag in the RSS.
  • From the link: Image from the og: image meta tag on the news page (from there, social networks take the image for the card-link)
  • From content: First image from the <content> tag in the RSS. Here, usually, there is the full text of the news, which may contain images.
  • Don't use: The image will not be attached to the post. Useful if you need to post large clickable image links on social media. Social networks usually do not generate card links if there is a picture in the post.

Watermark

Watermark will be put on an image from RSS.

Link

By default, links are published as large clickable images (Snippet). Such links look like a clickable picture with text and usually get more conversions compared to a usual link in the text.

You can choose not to attach the card link to the publication (Don't use).

How to publish

The following settings are available:

  • Check frequency: How often the feed is checked for new publications. The minimum check frequency is 10 minutes.

  • How many new items should be saved: When checking the service can find several new posts. This parameter allows you to specify how many posts from the found will be saved.

  • How to publish: This setting is only available for posts, NOT drafts. Allows you to choose, whether you want to publish the imported post immediately or with a custom delay.

How the posts are published: immediately, with an indication of a delay, or are sent to the content plan for the next free time for publication.

For example, the content plan for today has slots at 10:00 and 12:30. A post is already scheduled for 10:00. A new post with RSS will be scheduled for 12:30. Categories from the free slot will also be attached to this post.

If you choose "Schedule", you can choose a category in the schedule and publish to the free slot in that category:

  • Do not save new posts if there are * posts already saved with RSS: Avoids creating too many posts if posts are saved in delayed posts, or in drafts.
  • Save only unique links: Do not publish RSS news that have already been published in the last 7 days. This will help you avoid creating duplicate posts if the <pubDate> in your feed might change.
  • Use sort to find new posts: Allows you to find new posts if there is no <pubDate> field in RSS.
  • Sort posts by date to find a new post: Allows you to find new posts sorting posts by <pubDate> field in RSS.

Errors while processing RSS

Errors may occur while reading RSS. In this case, in the list of all RSS sources, we will show what kind of error occurred, and what can be done to make everything work.

You don't need to do anything on the service side. Even if there was an error, the service will continue to try to read the RSS, and if everything goes well, the error message will be cleared.

A more detailed technical reason is displayed along with the error description. You can send this text to your programmer and he will have more information to fix the problem.

Set up a slightly different post look for a different page

If you need to set up a different post view on a different page for the same RSS source, go to the list of all RSS sources. Click the arrow next to an "Edit" button and click "Duplicate RSS":

By clicking on this button you will create a copy. Now open it for editing, select only the page you need, go to the post type settings screen and edit the post as needed.

Then save the source.

If you have not changed the "How to publish" settings, then when checking the RSS, one post will be created for pages, but with different versions.
